More about this image

On June 1, 2007, Frank Wilczek and Betsy Devine visited two of CERN's vast underground construction sites -- CMS in the morning, and ATLAS in the afternoon.

This snapshot gives little sense of the scale or the science involved, but CERN's image galleries have many better photographs of this experiment, as well as a cutaway of the CMS layout and a diagram locating all four detectors (ATLAS, CMS, ALICE, and LHCb) on the 27 km ring of the LHC.
